Co-cultivation of diazotrophic terrestrical cyanobacteria and Arabidopsis thaliana.

The cover picture shows the accumulation of the cyanobacterium Desmonostoc muscorum (red fluorescence of chlorophyll a) around the roots of Arabidopsis thaliana cultivated on MS‐medium without nitrogen. This accumulation indicates a successful artificial induced symbiosis between a diazotrophic cyanobacterium and a plant. Diazotrophic cyanobacteria are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and release it as bioavailable nitrogen, which other organisms can utilize. Thus, they could be used as living nitrogen supplier, whereby the use of fertilizer could be reduced in agricultural industry. For details see article DOI 10.1002/elsc.202000068 on page 126.
