Influence of deformation-induced martensite formation on the mechanical properties of metastable austenite (Project B05/01)

This research project investigates the influence of deformation-induced martensite and the morphology of near surface microstructures on the fatigue behaviour and wear resistance of different surface morphologies in metastable austenitic stainless steel AISI 347.

The goal is to comprehensively assess different machined component surfaces of metastable stainless steels in terms of their physical and mechanical properties as well as wear resistance. Besides the mechanical processing factors, such as surface hardening and residual stress state, the project will take into account microstructural factors, such as the morphology of the martensite (volume fraction, thickness, distribution).

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 926—Component surfaces.
