Characterization of the surface morphology and the resulting fatigue behavior of additively manufactured and variously surface-finished AlSi10Mg

To exploit the immense technical potential of Additive Manufacturing (AM) we have to overcome some substantial challenges of AM materials, e.g., a relatively high process-induced surface topography. Because of low surface quality, functioning surfaces or highly loaded areas of AM parts require surface finishing.

Together with the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems (FBK) and as part of the priority research activity Advanced Materials Engineering (AME) we are investigating the relations between the Laser-based Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) process, surface finishing (cryogenic and conventional turning; rolling) and the resulting surface morphology of AlSi10Mg specimens. In this research project we focus on process-induced fatigue strength and defect tolerance in the surface layer.
