Fatigue behavior and lifetime calculation of the ductile cast iron EN-GJS-600 under isothermal and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loading

This research project aimed to characterize the fatigue behavior of the ductile cast iron EN-GJS-600 in order to evaluate its potential for downsizing in engine construction. Downsizing components in engines can improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. We investigated the influence of elevated temperatures and frequencies from 0.005 Hz to 100 Hz on the fatigue behavior of EN-GJS-600. We also examined the influence of dynamic strain aging at different frequencies and temperatures up to 400°C. For investigation of the lifetime under the different test conditions, we modified and used the short time procedure, known as PhyBaLLITfor total strain control. We found that with temperature increase tests (TIT), we were able to efficiently determine the frequency dependent range of temperatures of dynamic strain aging (Fig. 1)
