Rk-Normal

First Rk-standard worldwide developed at the Institute of Measurement and Sensor-Technology

The Rk-Parameters help to characterize functional areas and provide for example information concerning the mechanical load carrying capacity of surfaces. The parameters are standardized in ISO 13565-2, nevertheless for the parameters there were no existing measurement standards until now. Such a standard has now been developed at the Institute for Measurement and Sensor-Technology. The manufacturing occurred in cooperation with the “Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt“ (PTB) in Brunswick, the National Metrology Institute of Germany. The profile is based on a real surface and can so be used for a calibration of surface metrology instruments in step with the actual practice.

A prototype of the measurement standard was manufactured at the PTB and shows a very good compliance with the expected values. Also the standard deviations feature very low values. The manufacturing was executed with an ultra-precision turning process. The shown profile is periodically continued on the surface of the prototype.

We would like to thank the „Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt“ for the good cooperation.
