Micro-twist

The research project “Anwenderorientierte Charakterisierung von Mikrodrall auf Basis optischer Messeinrichtungen“ (“User-oriented characterisation of micro-twist based on optical devices for measurement”) is funded by the Stiftung Rheinland-Pfalz für Innovation and runs for three years.

Duration: three years

Motivation

Dynamic sealing systems are in widespread industrial use in automobile and mechanical engineering. An example is sealing lubricated rotating driving shafts from their non-lubricated surrounding with a radial shaft sealing ring. An automobile e.g. contains more than 80 moving parts requiring a dynamic sealing system. The leak tightness is influenced mainly by the shaft’s surface. Randomly distributed micro structures on the part’s surface are called micro-lead if they have a preferred orientation in relation to the part’s axis and can convey lubricant. These structures can help the development of leakage or dry running.

Aim

The project aims to develop a user-oriented evaluation method to characterise micro-twist in static and dynamic sealing systems based on optical measurements. The evaluation method will be designed to support metrological users in setting up production-related quality control loops. Parameters describing micro-twist will be developed. These parameters will provide reliable information about the leak tightness of assemblies.
