Chair of Applied Mechanics

Fracture mechanics

Short description

The lecture fracture mechanics deals with the causes, the manifestations and the evaluation of fracture in homogeneous materials. Based on an idealized crack model, the crack tip fields for linear elastic material behavior are determined and the intensity concepts are derived. Energy balances are used to develop further break criteria that lead to path-independent integrals. In the second part of the lecture, the application of fracture mechanics is discussed, taking into account plastic. The lecture concludes with a short introduction of damage mechanics. In addition to theory, numerical and experimental aspects are also covered.
