Production of bioactive compounds by brown algea cell cultures

This research project aims to overcome the major problems of seaweed farming and industrial-scale cultivation by development of closed-system bioreactors for the culture of the seaweeds for the production of bioactive compounds such as fucoidans. Fucus vesiculosus will be taken as an example of brown algae. The research project will be divided into two parts.

Part 1:

Before starting the production process, many points should be optimized on the dried powder to be applied later. For example:

  • Optimization of fucoidan extraction,
  • Optimization of fucoidan-assay and fucoidan-analytics,
  • Investigation of the anticoagulant activity, and
  • Structure elucidation.

Part 2: 

The tissue culture part will be focused on:

  • Explant sterilization,
  • Effect of sterilization protocol on the vitality,
  • Growth of the explant on different solid media and study the effect of different temperature, pH, light and hormones,
  • Growth in suspension culture, and
  • Investigation of the growth and production in wave bag bioreactor.
