Elektrobiotechnologie

Die Stromgewinnung mit Mikroorganismen in Form der mikrobiellen Brennstoffzelle (MFC, Abgabe von Elektronen an die Arbeitselektrode) ist bereits seit über einem Jahrhundert bekannt und vielfach betrachtet worden. Die mikrobielle Elektrosynthese hingegen (MES, Aufnahme von Elektronen von der Arbeitselektrode) wird erst seit wenigen Jahren detaillierter untersucht, wobei der bisherige Fokus vornehmlich auf der Bioremediation lag. Die Aufnahme von Elektronen von einer Elektrode oder von einer chemischen Substanz (Elektronenmediator) verschiebt das Redoxgleichgewicht des Pyridin Nukleotid Pools des Mikroorganismus in Richtung NADH. Durch diese erhöhte Verfügbarkeit reduzierter Kofaktoren, können die MES Systeme für die Produktion reduzierter Produkte, wie Butanol und Ethanol genutzt werden. Bioelektrochemische Systeme (BES) existieren bisher noch nicht im industriellen Maßstab. Verschiedene Autoren stellten jedoch erste ökonomische Betrachtungen für BES im großen Maßstab auf. Die Autoren berechneten, dass der aktuelle Preis pro Elektron in einem BES niedriger oder vergleichbar ist mit dem Preis eines Elektrons, welches aus Zucker (Saccharose) gewonnen wird. Dabei wurden nur kathodische Reaktionen betrachtet, zusätzliche Wertschöpfung durch eine anodische Reaktion bzw. die Bereitstellung der Elektronen an der Anode durch Mikroorganismen wurden nicht eingerechnet. Erste Dimensionsberechnungen am Beispiel der Lysin-Produktion erreichten zudem vergleichbare Fermentergrößen für ein BES und eine konventionelle Fermentation mit Kosteneinsparungen von 8,4 % in Europa und 18 % in den USA bei Einsatz des BES. Elektrobiotechnologische Prozesse könnten damit in Zukunft kostengünstige Produktionen von Grundchemikalien und Biokraftstoffen erlauben. Das Lehrgebiet Bioverfahrenstechnik beschäftigt sich seit mehreren Jahren mit der Entwicklung neuartiger Reaktoren für elektrobiotechnologische Prozesse, der Untersuchung der Elektronentransportprozesse und der Produktbildung unter Anlegen eines Potentials.
